No, no. Not the south you're thinking of, rather in the direction of the South Coast of KZN.
We left Joburg in the early hours of Sunday 4 July, making good time reaching our final destination being Palm Beach near the Eastern Cape border. We wasted no time at all, tying FG knots and getting rigged up ready for battle with anything that swims!
Spending almost every holiday in my childhood and my teen years no more than 20 minutes away from where we stayed, I felt right at home on those rocks. It had been at least 5 years since i stood on any rocks that were that slick and waves that were that big and washy, it took me the first session of fishing to find my feet again, my legs took a beating ! You never really remember how difficult it can be to stay on the rocks for 6 hours at a time, until those 6 hours go past and you struggle climbing down the rocks at the end of that session. nonetheless, i was beyond happy to be there!
The first cast I made was targeting some kind of a toothy critter, hoping for a small Grey Shark to get the trip going, but came up short on the shark side and caught a few small edible fish instead.
It wasn't until the second night on Orange Rocks where I finally got pulled flat, I pulled the hook right in front of the rocks and dropped my first potential Grey Shark. The third night finally brought me some success with my first little Grey, needless to say, my trip was made! The little Grey came on a Blacktail Head with the fillets butterflied back up onto the head and cottoned on for extra support and flavour in the water. TRIP MADE!
Boy, it was good to be back in the salt, I am beyond excited for the next trip we do. Hopefully, sooner rather than later. I am keen to see what the other boys write, keep an eye out for their posts, coming soon!
