If you've been chasing bass like I have, you know the thrill of that first solid hit on a good day.
Over the years, I've filled my tackle box with every gadget under the sun, but one lure keeps earning its spot on every trip: the G40. This simple soft plastic stickbait with a tail isn't flashy, but it flat-out works for largemouth bass in all kinds of conditions. Today, I'm breaking down why it’s so effective and how a smart colour choice can make all the difference.
The Setup: My favourite Way to Fish It
I love mine on a 3/0 or 4/0 hook with a Texas rig Most of the time with a 3/16oz tungsten. Cast it out, let it sink naturally with that subtle flutter of the tail, and give it occasional twitches and bounces, Or just dead-stick it, or even swim it.
In some situations weightless can be fished topwater.
Bass can't resist the G40,It's perfect for targeting docks, grass edges, points, or shallow flats—places where bass ambush prey. No fancy retrieve needed. That's part of the magic: it's forgiving for beginners but deadly in the hands of experienced anglers who let the bait do the work.
Why the G40 Works So Well
Bass are opportunistic predators. The G40 mimics an easy meal—something injured or falling through the water column. Its salt-impregnated body gives it a perfect sink rate and that irresistible tail kicking on the drop. The soft, flexible plastic feels natural in a bass's mouth, so they hold on longer, giving you time to set the hook.
I've caught fish in clear dams, stained rivers, and everything in between. It shines when bass are finicky or pressured—those days when reaction baits like crankbaits or spinnerbaits get ignored.
In my experience, it's a numbers producer and a big-fish magnet, especially during post-spawn or Autum feeding periods.
The Colour Factor: Keep It Simple
Lure colour doesn't have to be complicated. Match it to water clarity and light conditions for the best results:
• Green Pumpkin Blue (or Green Pumpkin with blue flake): My all-time favourite. It works almost everywhere. In clearer water, it matches natural forage like crab or, bait fish. The subtle flakes add just enough flash without overdoing it.
• Black, Black/Red or Junebug: Killer in low-light, stained, or muddy water. Creates a strong silhouette that bass can spot from a distance.
• Watermelon Red Flake: Great for pressured fish or when there's a lot of vegetation. The red adds a "wounded" look that triggers strikes.
